CONGRESS AND COMMUNITY

"FUNDAMAZONIA AND THE GORDON & BETTY MOORE FOUNDATION ARE WORKING TOGETHER ON AN INITIATIVE TO:

ADVANCE NEOTROPICAL CONSERVATION BY CREATING DURABILITY OF THE LATIN AMERICAN WILDLIFE CONFERENCES

The overall goal of the initiative is to secure long-term durability of the Latin American Wildlife Conferences as a means of enhancing conservation in the Neo tropics.

The biennial Wildlife Conferences are a strategic forum for discussion, capacity building, and refinement of methodologies for science-based, community led wildlife management and conservation in the Neo tropics.  Over the past 20 years the conferences have been key in advancing wildlife conservation in South and Central America. Before 2012 there was no institution or society that was overseeing the continuation of the conferences, which was making this important forum vulnerable.  To insure the durability of the conferences a community wide Latin American Wildlife Society (COMFAUNA) was established during the 2012 Salta congress that can oversee the conferences and proceedings as an outcome of the initiative. This society is intended to be independent to maintain the conferences as a community that is not linked to any specific institution.
